MAX5931AEEP+T has become an important part of the power-management integrated circuits (PMICs) product families, specifically the Hot Swap controllers. The Hot Swap controller product family provide overcurrent protection and temperature-sensitive power limiting in an adjustable capacitor. These power controllers interface seamlessly with virtually any microprocessor and other digital logic, enabling efficient, rated performance while maintaining safety operation.

The MAX5931AEEP+T is an enhanced Hot Swap controller that offers comprehensive system control and protection features that simplify and automate the power-up and power-down sequences, ensuring reliable circuit operation. The MAX5931AEEP+T is designed to operate independent of the load current, helping maintain the desired outputs and system dynamic responses in the face of fluctuating loads and other transient conditions. The MAX5931AEEP+T includes programmable current foldback and overtemperature shutdown, with adjustable foldback threshold from 1A to 8A. It also provides overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent protection, adjustable hysteresis of ±2% for under-voltage lockout and ±10% for overvoltage protection, as well as programmable delay times for both power up and power down.

The open-drain operates with a 0V to 6V range, providing the power source with enhanced short-circuit protection, which is particularly useful for small-to-medium size switches and on printed-circuit boards. To improve system stability, the MAX5931AEEP+T features an integrated soft-start circuitry. The integrated low on-resistance power MOSFET eliminates the need for an external transistor and can automatically adjust output resistance rate, prevent inrush current, and protect the load from over-current events.

The MAX5931AEEP+T offers a wide array of features to help ensure the safety of power-hungry applications. Its self-resetting current limit feature reduces the amount of time the system must remain off when over-current is detected, minimizing downtime. Its over-temperature protection is adjustable to accommodate different device temperatures, ensuring the safe operation of applications with extreme thermal loads.

The MAX5931AEEP+T also offers protection from transients, supporting up to ±20V transients. Its transient detection circuit blocks the buck switch when transients exceed the threshold, and the power controller is immune to reduced soldering and overstress issues. The MAX5931AEEP+T automatically detects the fault, stores the voltage level and port configuration information, and provides programmable cutoff times to protect against system damage.

The integrated fault timer gives a programmable delay time between transitions in the current sensing limit states, allowing for controlled system reboot in the event of an over-current. The fault timer is adjustable from 0.18 seconds to 15 minutes. This programmable fault timer helps to start up slowly after a fault event, allowing the user to slowly increase the voltage to achieve the best power-up sequence.

The MAX5931AEEP+T provides excellent thermal performance and power dissipation capabilities as well. Its heat-dissipating package maintains a maximum junction temperature of 150°C. The MAX5931AEEP+T does not require a heatsink or fans to cool, making it an ideal solution for applications that require a low noise, low vibration solution.
