MAX8677CETG+ Application Field and Working PrinciplePMIC - Battery ChargersModern consumer electronic products require power from various sources, including batteries of various sizes and capacities. For example, a portable laptop could draw power from a large prismatic battery and a mobile phone from a small, single-cell LiPo or LiFePO4 battery. To ensure optimal performance and safety of the connected device, it is important to have a properly optimized power delivery and management system. The Maxim Integrated MAX8677CETG+ is a PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) circuit specifically designed for use with rechargeable batteries and provides a streamlined design solution for low-power battery application.The MAX8677CETG+ can be used to charge a variety of Prismatic, LiPo, and LiFePO4 batteries. It uses a 4-bit Battery Temperature Monitoring (BTM) System to monitor the battery temperature and adjust the charging parameters accordingly to prevent an overcharge, and a Power Path Management (PPM) System to dynamically, efficiently manage input and battery current. Additionally, it has a variety of safety features such as overvoltage protection and overcurrent protection.This device can be used in a variety of applications, including wearables and mobile devices, portable medical equipment and entertainment devices. Due to its wide input voltage range (between 2.7V and 5.5V) and low quiescent current, it can also be used in always-on monitoring and safety modules.The MAX8677CETG+ is a 32-pin QFN device with a 9.2mm x 9.2mm package. It consists of two parts – the Inductor Boost Regulator (IBR) and the Battery Charge Controller (BCC).The IBR regulates either a VBUS or an InvBus input to the predetermined output set point, guaranteeing a clean and stable power supply for charging. The BCC then regulates and manages battery charging, discharged, and standby modes to optimally utilize the available power. The BCC implements a switch-mode charging algorithm, and utilizes Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) to reduce the power consumption in Standby Mode and reduce the charging time in comparison to conventional linear chargers.The MAX8677CETG+ has a wide input voltage range (2.7V to 5.5V), requiring only an external N-channel MOSFET as an input switch. It supports up to 2A of fast charging current, and up to 10A of trickle charging current, with an adjustable charge voltage up to 4.6V. It also features over-voltage protection, thermal regulation, and detects if the battery is faulty.In conclusion, the MAX8677CETG+ is a PMIC solution specifically designed for low-power rechargeable battery applications.
