Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS
The MAXM17503EVKIT# is an evaluation board designed to evaluate the performance of the MAXM17503 low-cost, AC/DC primary-side regulator. This device is suitable for many applications and supplies an adjustable regulated output voltage in a wide range – from 0.9V to 33V. Additionally, the device also offers a high power density – up to 3A in a tiny SOT-23 package.
Application field
The MAXM17503EVKIT#, due to its high power density, is most suitable when a high output voltage (0.9V to 33V) is required in compact size applications. The device is used in various off-line SMPS applications ranging from home adapters, lighting fixtures and few LEDs to industrial, automotive and networking applications.
The device can also be used in high-frequency 50 W-800 W full-load applications like Ultrabook/notebook adapters, mini adapters, chargers, TVs, audio equipment, industrials, etc. For applications with high-endo-leakage power, it is recommended to have a stand-by power less than 0.1W.
Working principle
The MAXM17503EVKIT# functions as a primary-side switching regulator. In the device, an inductor is used to maintain energy storage with a diode connected at the switch node that supplies the load with a DC voltage. The MAXM17503EVKIT# can operate in continuous conduction modes (CCM)or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In CCM, the diode will stay open and the current in the inductor will remain constant. In DCM, the inductor current approaches zero at the switching frequency peak.
The MAXM17503 provides adjustable output voltage by utilizing two different approaches.The first is by a pair of voltage sense feedback resistors, and the second is a fixed voltage-based regulator, which combines both a control loop and a reference comparator. The voltage sense feedback network consists of a linear voltage regulator, bias circuit, and opto-coupler for Over-Current-Protection (OCP) and short-circuit protection (SCP).
The MAXM17503 also provides a pulse width modulation (PWM) control mode, in which the output voltage transitions from full-load to light-load condition much more quickly than in CCM and DCM. This mode improves efficiency while providing fast load step response. Additionally, the MAXM17503 also offers over-temperature protection (OTP) for extra safety in case of temperature rise or over-current conditions.
Overall, the MAXM17503EVKIT# is an excellent evaluation board to evaluate the performance of the MAXM17503 low-cost, AC/DC primary-side regulator. It can be used in many applications where a high output voltage is required as well as applications with higher power transfer requiremnts.
