Application Field

The MAZ81300ML is a single, unidirectional silicon diode designed for general purpose use. Working Principle

In its common form, a Zener diode is a diode in which the reverse breakdown voltage - in this case, the MAZ81300ML’s rated 8.3V - has been intentionally formed to be a known, fixed value. When the reverse voltage exceeds 8.3V, it induces this breakdown in the diode. This breakdown then results in a very low resistance between the diode’s anode and cathode.

Using the MAZ81300ML in a voltage regulation circuit is a simple process. The diode is placed in parallel with the circuit, as close to the load as possible. The diode’s anode is connected to the load, and the cathode is connected to ground. When this is done, the diode will begin to regulate the voltage passing through the load - once the voltage rises above 8.3V, the diode conducts and allows excess voltage to pass to ground, reducing the voltage across the load.

The MAZ81300ML’s fast recovery time and low leakage current also allow it to be used in power protection circuits, where it blocks the flow of current during an over-voltage condition. Once the voltage falls back below 8.3V, the diode automatically becomes non-conductive and allows current to pass again.
