MC79L12ACPRP is a member of the MC79XX Linear Voltage Regulator series, specifically the Negative Voltage Regulator by On Semiconductor. This series is part of the On Semiconductor Power Management IC (PMIC) series and is dedicated to solve single low current supply problems in electronic equipment. This series includes 3-pin positive and negative voltage regulator with higher performance than standard 78XX and 79XX. The MC79L12ACPRP features full protection against overtemperature, low current consumption and high peak output current.

The MC79L12ACPRP needs a load capacitance at the output of at least 1μF. Moreover, it requires voltage input higher than the required output voltage for the correct operation. Furthermore, the maximum allowed output current can be up to 1A peak and 0.1A continuous. Ideally, the MC79L12ACPRP 5V or 12V input voltage regulators only require two external components, a capacitor and a resistor, for safe operation. The resistor provides the required sub-voltage operation from input when the load experiences a large decrease on demand.

This member has an output voltage specified in the datasheet of -12V and an operating temperature range up to +125°C. The package is the TO–220, with the following dimensions: 26.9mm x 10.6mm x 10.3mm. The ±1.5% accuracy and maximum voltage drop of 3.2V is the result of the regulation of the output voltage at normal load current (see Figure 1). The maximum voltage drop of 3.2V occurs when the output load is at 1.0A and the quiescent current is guaranteed at a maximum of 6mA. However, the integrated overheater protection ensures that the output voltage is shut down when the die temperature rises above 120°C. Once the temperature is reduced, the output voltage will normally be enabled again.

The MC79L12ACPRP has the P­–Channel MOSFET structure. The voltage regulator’s operation is based on the comparison between the reference voltage, the output voltage, and the feed­back voltage, which will cause a current flow, and the upper transistor will operate as a variable resistor in order to regulate the output voltage. The system is completed by the lower MOSFET which acts as a switch to drive the load. Following figure 2, the average output current that flows around the base-emitter junction of the voltage reference is proportional to the output voltage and hence to an imposed load current. This current flow is known as the error amplifier current.

The main function of the MC79L12ACPRP is to provide a constant and regulated output voltage, no matter how large the load or the input voltage may be. Its applications include memory conversion, digital power management systems, low-voltage power supplies and switching power supplies. Additionally, it can be used as a buffer, to keep any voltage drop to a minimum and thus maintaining the performance of the IC. It can also be used to increase the stability, accuracy and temperature coefficient of the regulator.

Overall, the MC79L12ACPRP performs its linear voltage regulation functions reliably and continuously with a good degree of accuracy. It provides a regulated output voltage of up to -12V while preventing the output voltage from exceeding the specified limit, even under over-current conditions. Moreover, the integrated overheater protection ensures that the voltage will not become too high or dangerous. Finally, its P–Channel MOSFET structure and limited number of external components make it extremely easy to configure and set up.
