MCP1640DT-I/CHY is a DC-DC switching regulator from Microchip Technology which can deliver up to 2.5A continuous power with a small 1.00 mm x 1.00 mm QFN or 1.10 mm x 1.10 mm DFN Green-mode footprint. It is intended for use in applications requiring low Noise, low Iq operation. These converters consist of high-performance, low dropout (LDO) and low on-resistance MOSFET switch, an Analog Front End (AFE) featuring synchronous Rectification and PWM circuitry, an error amplifier, temperature sensing, and frequency compensation circuit. 

MCP1640DT-I/CHY is designed to offer a low-solution cost solution in many applications such as battery-operated portable devices, peripherals, and general-purpose use. Its wide input voltage range of 3V to 28V and adjustable output voltage make it suitable for a variety of applications. It also offers excellent performance in critical power conversion applications such as battery charging and power management. Additionally, its built-in reverse current protection and current limit protect it against shorts and helps to maintain power integrity. Together with its low noise, low Iq and low EMI figure, the MCP1640DT-I/CHY makes it suitable for many applications.

MCP1640DT-I/CHY is based on align topology, using a synchronous buck regulator to step down the input voltage. As illustrated in Figure 1, the input voltage, VIN (typically 3V to 28V), is stepped down to set up the output voltage, VOUT (typical 0.8V to 3V). This is achieved with a minimum of external components; for example, only one inductor and two capacitors are required.

MCP1640DT-I/CHY employs synchronous Rectification to improve efficiency compared to traditional low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulators. Synchronous Rectification (also called synchronous buck converter) results in higher efficiency than linear regulators, because the power loss on rectifier or diodes is eliminated. The duty cycle of the rectifier is determined by the high-side and low-side MOSFETs, providing high switching frequency and low output ripple. 

In Figure 1, the high-side MOSFET is used to control the output voltage. The low-side MOSFET is used to cut off current when the output voltage exceeds the regulated level and also to turn the regulator on and off. The circuit also includes an error amplifier,which is used to compare the output voltage with the required level determined by the external voltage divider and then adjusts the duty cycle accordingly to maintain the output voltage at the required level. Additionally, temperature sensing and frequency compensation are used to improve stability and performance.
