MCP73213-A61I/MF is a battery charge management integrated circuit (IC). This device is a multi-function controller that supports operation modes for Li-Ion/Li-Polymer Secondary Cells with standalone operation. It is designed primarily for Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery pack applications and is suitable for both 1-cell and 2-cell configurations.

Working Principle
The MCP73213-A61I/MF battery charger system consists of a P-channel MOSFET (PMFET) switch and an integrated, programmable switch mode step-down converter with battery precision current regulation. A regulated constant voltage, regulated current, and regulated temperature (TEMP) charging protocol is embedded in the PMIC to monitor and control the charging cycles and process. The MCP73213-A61I/MF operates with a single Li-Ion/Li-Polymer cell battery, and also supports 2-cell independent and series configurations.
When the VC pin voltage of the MCP73213-A61I/MF exceeds the battery voltage level, the PMFET switch is turned on and current is supplied to the external capacitor. This capacitor is connected in series to the battery, which will act as a charge regulator, limiting the current according to the binary logic of the internal detection and regulation duty cycle. This happens until the TEMP shutdown level is reached, at which time the PMFET switch is turned off, preventing further charging despite the VC pin exceeding the battery level.
The MCP73213-A61I/MF also provides fixed frequency current detect regulation. This allows the internal step-down switching frequency to remain constant for precise current regulation, thereby optimizing the charging process. The device also cuts off excess voltage levels when the battery voltage is close to the system output voltage, preventing overcharge. And it will also disconnect the battery if a temperature of greater than the predetermined range is detected.
