MCP73831T-2ATI/MC is an advanced advanced compact standalone Linear Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charger. This battery charger is suitable for applications that require reliable and accurate charging of batteries of different types. The MCP73831T-2ATI/MC forms part of a family of devices specifically designed by Microchip Technology as PMIC - Battery Chargers. This range of battery charger ICs is fully integrated and combines power management, DC/DC regulators, Charge pumps and switching regulators for efficient charging of Li-ion and Li-Polymer batteries. The working principle of the MCP73831T-2ATI/MC consists of several stages. The first stage involves detection of the battery voltage and then setting up the input voltage and charge current accordingly. This is done using the US port. The US port communicates with the battery charger through a device taxonomy. The USB interface signals the charge current limit, maximum input voltage and safety features.
The second stage is the constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) charge control logic. The charger monitors the battery voltage and current and adjusts the charge voltage and current, as necessary, to keep the battery charged at the right level. This stage provides the highest fast chargeefficiency, allowing a wide range of battery chemistries. Once the desired voltage is reached, the charge current is decreased until the battery is charged at a predetermined termination current.
The third stage is the safety timer, which ensures that the battery charge is terminated within the specified time. The battery charger also offers reverse polarity protection and over temperature protection. This prevents damage from incorrect insertion of the battery or from excessive heat generated by the charging process.
The fourth stage is the component detection. This component ensures that all components of the charge battery system, such as fuses, resistors and thermal sensor, are correctly configured and functioning properly. If a component is not detected, the charge circuit will not be enabled, reducing the risk of damage due to incorrect component selection or poor component placement.
The fifth stage is the charge algorithm logic. This algorithm monitors the battery voltage, capacity and temperature and adjusts the charge rate accordingly. It also enables the user to program specific charge parameters, such as charge times, current setpoints and battery temperature ranges. This feature is important for applications that require precise battery charging in situations of frequent input voltage variation.
