PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) can be found in almost any electronic system. The MCP73832T-4ADI/MC is a battery charge management IC (Power Management IC). It is an advanced linear, constant-current/constant-voltage Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charge management controller. The IC provides a complete charge management solution for single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer applications.
The MCP73832T-4ADI/MC is uniquely designed to provide constant current/constant voltage charging of single cell, Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries. This is accomplished with minimal external components. Output current capability exceeds one Amp. The application field of the MCP73832T-4ADI/MC is extremely vast. It is widely used in a variety of portable and stand-alone applications, including car electronics, gaming, communication, surveillance equipment, and medical instruments.
Working principle of the MCP73832T-4ADI/MC starts with connecting the battery to be charged to the BATT terminals, an AC adapter to the ACIN rail and the system load to the OUT terminal. The precision sensing circuitry uses the voltage across the sense resistor to control the output voltage. The setpoint for the output voltage is programmed with a single external resistor. It also has a built-in MOSFET pass transistor that limits current through the Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery while regulating voltage across the sense resistor.
In addition to the main charging loop, there is secondary loop feedback loop that monitors the battery terminals to prevent overcharge and excessive current. The secondary loop is used to set the current level at which the main charging loop switches to the constant voltage charge phase. This is done by sensing the voltage drop across the sense resistor at the programmed Taper Current and turning off the low side control MOSFET.
The MCP73832T-4ADI/MC also features an integrated PowerPath mechanism. This allows system loads to be added or removed from the battery without interrupting the charging process. This provides a low standby current and allows the MCP73832T-4ADI/MC to respond quickly to changing load currents when the system is powered down.
The IC can also be programmed to run in either a charge-only mode or an auto-release mode for multi-chemistry applications. In release mode, the IC can detect when the charging completes and will then provide an output voltage appropriate for the battery type and current level. This allows a variety of chemistry types to be charged without the need to reprogram the IC.
In addition, the MCP73832T-4ADI/MC can be programmed to support various charge termination charge termination methods, including timer based termination, voltage based termination and absence of voltage based termination. This provides a comprehensive, programmable solution for single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer applications.
The MCP73832T-4ADI/MC is an ideal solution for portable and stand-alone applications that require precise charging and battery management.
