Working Principle

The MCP73833-AMI/UN utilizes a constant-current/constant-voltage charge algorithm with temperature regulation. The charge state logic is independent of the full-scale voltage of Li-Ion or Li-Poly cells, allowing the charge state logic to work with the entire voltage range while preserving accuracy. The charge process is simple, the system is enabled when a supply voltage greater than 3.2 V is reached, current will start to flow from the source, either a wall adaptor or USB port. The MCP73833-AMI/UN will provide a constant current source to the battery and monitor the battery voltage. The maximum current is set by the size of the external resistor (RSET).Once the battery voltage reaches 4.2V, the constant voltage phase begins. The current will then drop to a maintenance level of approximately 10% of the programmed input current. The device will remain in the constant voltage phase until the trickle current reaches the programmed input current (100mA default). Once the trickle current reaches the programmed input current, signaling the end of the charge cycle, the MCP73833-AMI/UN will transition to the idle state and charge completion is indicated by the status pin (PG). The MCP73833-AMI/UN has additional features that improve the operation and life of battery. These features include temperature tracking, short-circuit protection, overvoltage protection and undervoltage lockout.
