Application Field

MCP73833-CNI/UN can be used for both single cell Li-ion/Li-Polymer battery as well as 3.6V/3.7V single cell Li-FePO4 battery. It is widely used in portable devices such as laptop, mobile phone, PDA, digital camera, power bank, and other battery-powered products.Activation and maintenance of single cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer batteries can occur anuwhere between 4.2V to 4.3V.The MCP73833-CNI/UN also monitors this voltage. It features an A/C adapter input to power the system and an internal current-limited switch to supply power to the battery. Once the battery is plugged into the system, MCP73833-CNI/UN starts charging the battery.This means it can effectively be used for applications that demand proper battery charging and ultimate safety. Moreover, MCP73833-CNI/UN integrates a thermal monitoring state machine to maintain optimal temperature conditions for better longevity of battery.

Working Principle

The MCP73833-CNI/UN features current mode control which enables the device to maintain a constant current during the charging cycle. The maximum charging currents are selectable either via the board or via an I2C interface, while the end of the cycle is controlled via current sense. The temperature monitoring state machine is used to monitor the temperature making sure the charging of the battery is not excessive.The MCP73833-CNI/UN also has two different operating modes, Constant-Current/Constant-Voltage (CC/CV) and Charge Termination. In the CC/CV mode, the battery is charged with a constant current for a certain amount of time until it reaches a certain voltage limit. At this point, the device switches to constant voltage mode where it maintains a steady voltage for the battery until it reaches its maximum capacity.The other mode of the MCP73833-CNI/UN is the charge termination mode which is helpful in increasing the lifetime of battery. In this mode, the device automatically terminates the charging cycle when a battery has full charge. This makes sure the battery is not overcharged which can lead to damaging of battery.
