The MCP73834T-FCI/MF is a highly efficient monolithic device for battery charging, battery monitoring and other secondary power conversion applications. This device has been tailored to simplify battery charging integrated circuits and expand current capabilities up to 1.65A. The battery charger is designed to charge one or two single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries in series. Working Principle
The MCP73834T-FCI/MF consists of four main blocks: Battery Monitor, Battery Charger, Battery Protection and Battery Socket Detection (BSCD).The Battery Monitor enables the device to market the current level of the battery, providing information of the charge cycle’s general status, including under-voltage lockouts (UV), temperature monitoring, temperature margin settings and two alerts for direct system response.
The Battery Charger block provides the necessary current and voltage control loops to manage the battery charging, including voltage regulation, current regulation and current limit. Battery Protection block manage the application safety, offering safety protections as output overvoltage protection (OVP), over-temperature protection (OTP), over-current limit protection (OCP) and battery short circuit protection (SCP). The BSCD block provides means to detect the presence of batteries connected to the charger socket. It uses a voltage divider to monitor the battery voltage.
The sequence of charging operation is initiated every time batteries are connected in the charger socket. Regardless of battery voltage level, device will not enter power save mode until two separate timers elapse. This allows to measure the battery voltage with sufficient stability to detect battery short and/or open circuit faults. The device will then detect the presence of batteries in charger socket and enters CC mode, where it ramps up the burst current to the Charge Current (ICHG) setting before adjusting the output voltage to the Charge Voltage (VCHG) setting.
The device will maintain the output voltage level within the specified range (± 4%) and regulate the current level automatically to maintain the battery charge. Output voltage is clamped to prevent voltage runaway and overcharging. When the current drops down to a predefined value (C/10), the battery charge is complete and the device enters power save mode.
The MCP73834T-FCI/MF primary regulating loop achieves a 4% regulation capability with accuracy and flexibility. The output current ripple is controlled by an adjustable compensation network, allowing designers to target optimal ripple levels while allowing operation over a wide range of battery chemistries. The use of low dropout voltage power switches enables slightly higher battery voltage availability and continuous internal terminal voltage operation. A Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) scheme provides superior efficiency over a wide range of loads.
