The MCP73838T-FCI/UN is a member of a series of battery charge management integrated circuits (ICs). It is a cost-effective, renewable, single-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) and lithium-polymer (Li-polymer) battery charger with integrated safety features for three different input sources. This battery charger IC provides accuracy and control in single-cell applications, and its charging voltage and current is programmable. The MCP73838T-FCI/UN is ideal for applications which require fast and reliable charging of single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer battery packs, such as cell phones.

The MCP73838T-FCI/UN can be implemented with a wide range of input voltage sources such as an AC-to-DC adapter, powered USB port, or DC adapter. Depending on the input voltage, the battery charger IC charges the battery with either a constant voltage (CV) current limited profile, a constant current (CC) voltage limited profile, or a programmable CC/CV profile. The device is programmed and controlled over a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), and includes safety features such as overvoltage, undervoltage and under-temperature protection. The MCP73838T-FCI/UN is available in a tiny QFN-10L, 4x4 mm package, making it well suited for space-constrained applications.

The MCP73838T-FCI/UN is designed to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution for charging single-cell Li-ion battery packs. The device can be programmed for a constant voltage current limited charging profile, a constant current voltage limited charging profile, or a programmable CC/CV charging profile. The charging current can be programmed up to 1.5A, allowing the battery to be charged quickly, while the integrated SoftStart feature ensures a smooth transition between the pre-charge and constant voltage phases. The device also provides programmable output current limit and reclining options to minimize charge time without risking overcharging the battery.

The built-in SPI interface allows the MCP73838T-FCI/UN to communicate with the host microcontroller for managing the battery charging process. The host microcontroller can program the device’s charging parameters, output current limit, and other features. The bq20x communication protocol is also supported for communication with linear battery gas gauges.

The MCP73838T-FCI/UN also provides integrated safety features to prevent battery damage. The device includes overvoltage, undervoltage, and under-temperature protection to protect the battery from unsafe conditions, as well as a battery temperature monitor to ensure optimal performance of the battery during charging.
