MCP73861-I/SL is a highly-integrated and feature-rich battery charging solution, belonging to the PMIC – Battery Chargers category. This device offers a linear battery charging controller specifically developed to provide charger and portable device power designs with a simple, cost-effective and fast charging solution. The MCP73861-I/SL is optimized for single-cell Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and Lithium-Ion Polymer (Li-Ion Polymer) battery charging.Application Field
The MCP73961-I/SL is suitable for charging a variety of Li-Ion, Li-Ion Polymer, Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) and Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery chemistries. It provides high system accuracy by effectively monitoring charge termination and charge status, utilizing charging current/voltage regulation accuracy for different charger adapters, and providing onboard temperature monitoring features.By integrating the charge current regulation, charge status monitoring and safety features, MCP73861-I/SL significantly reduce external components, design complexity and board area. The minimal external components required are the battery, thermistor, tantalum capacitor, and a single power MOSFET.The MCP73861-I/SL is suitable for many consumer electronics such as smart phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, portable DVD players, electronic navigators, and other battery-powered applications.Working Principle
The MCP73861-I/SL is based on a linear charging control architecture that utilizes maximum power point control (MPPC) for enhanced system accuracy. The MPPC reduces the peak power dissipation requirement of the external power MOSFET, allowing a lower cost and lower profile power MOSFET solution.The device operates from a standard 5-pin SOT-23 package. Four of the pins provide for input power, Battery Voltage, Charge Termination and Charge Status. The fifth pin, the Temperature monitor (TEMP) provides an on-board temperature source for user-programmable thermal regulation.The MCP73861-I/SL offers precision fast-charge current control, thermal regulation, and terminates charge current when the battery is fully charged. The charge algorithm is programmed with 4-bits using the Logic Input Pins (PROG 1 - 4).The device initializes the fast-charge program by starting a charging cycle when Battery Voltage is detected as below 4.25V. Fast-charge current is continuously evaluated during charging and controlled with the external voltage regulator. The external voltage regulator sets the total output current of the power adapter. The power adapter regulator current setting will act as the current limit while in fast-charge mode. If a sudden current surge is detected, fast-charge current is reduced to the safe level to avoid possible damage.The current and voltage regulation accuracy of MCP73861-I/SL is programmed with 4-bits via the PROG Pin inputs. The charge current setting ranges from 10% of the maximum charge current of the adapter to the maximum adapter current.The MCP73861-I/SL also provides on-Board temperature monitoring and protection. The TEMP pin features an embedded 10K NTC thermistor for use in regulating temperature during charging.The charge termination of MCP73861-I/SL is based on the constant voltage charging method. The termination voltage (Tr), the maximum charge voltage of the battery, is programmed with 4-bits via the PROG inputs.The MCP73861-I/SL includes three charge status pins (CHRG, STAT, FAULT) that allows the system to monitor the current charging state and overall condition of the battery. It provides a LED indication of the current charging status, so that the user can quickly determine whether the device is operating properly or needs adjustment.Conclusion
