The MCP73861T-I/ML is a top of the line PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) in the Battery Charger category. It is a Microchip Technology-developed, low quiescent current, fully integrated linear solution for battery charging and regularly used for charging single-cell Li-Ion, Li-Pol and LiFePO4 batteries.
This device integrates a high accuracy current, voltage and temperature measurements, configurable charge current, charge termination, safety timer and fault monitor, thermal limit and other features combined into a single IC. The device also supports I2C interface communication, making it possible to access status and configure parameters for the charging in real time.
The MCP73861T-I/ML is designed to work in either constant-current/constant voltage (CC/CV) or constant-voltage/constant current (CV/CC) charging modes. In CC/CV mode, at regulating output current up to 2A, the battery charge current will be gradually decreased as the voltage increases. This allows the battery to be charged without the risk of overcharging. In CV/CC mode, charge current will be maintained at the set value until it drops below a certain limit when the pre-specified voltage threshold is reached. This helps prevent any damage to the battery due to continuing to charge a battery that has become fully charged.
The MCP73861T-I/ML is equipped with an analog multiplexer to enable monitoring and logging of both input and output voltages, cell voltages and temperature in order to ensure a safe charge. In addition, the battery charge status is indicated by an LED, allowing for easy monitoring of the state of charge at any time. The MCP73861T-I/ML also features full-regulation accuracy to ensure the protection of the battery from over-charge and over-discharge.
