The MCP73862T-I/ML is a member of the MCP738xx family of device sub-series, which is designated as an integrated battery-charging module. This series of devices provides optimized charging capabilities for single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer battery applications with fast charge current, low desaturation voltage and low ICQ.

The primary benefit of the MCP73862T-I/ML is its ability to control and monitor the charging process, providing a number of safety features that make it suitable for applications in any field requiring battery-charging solutions. In order to survive in a wide range of applications, the MCP73862T-I/ML is specifically designed to be adaptable, featuring various charge current selections, thermistor linearity, and other adjustment options.

MCP73862T-I/ML is designed to provide an efficient, low maintenance and safe solution for charging Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries. The charging operation begins when the battery is connected to an AC adapter or any suitable supply. On power-up, the MCP73862T-I/ML automatically detects whether the connected battery is fully charged. If the battery is not fully charged, the MCP73862T-I/ML starts charging the battery with a current selected by an external resistor. The device adopted advanced linear recharge algorithm that ensures adequate trickle current for trickle-charging of accumulated internal cells.

The circuitry of the MCP73862T-I/ML is continuously monitoring the status of the battery during the charging cycle. When the charge current falls below a programmed value because of a low battery voltage, temperature or charging time, the MCP73862T-I/ML terminates the charge cycle and enters the standby mode until the battery is removed and re-inserted or the status of the battery changes otherwise. It also features safety features such as charge overvoltage-protection, overcurrent-protection, and overtemperature-protection, providing additional protection against battery damage.

At the end of the charging cycle, the MCP73862T-I/ML reaches the maximum charge voltage (VCD) set by the external resistor and the top off current (ITOP) is terminated after ensuring that such voltage is held for a certain time. The MCP73862T-I/ML also incorporates two low power consumption sleep modes that can be used for implementing \'fast recharge\', i.e. maintaining the battery charge within optimal range, as well as longer standby times, thus providing extended battery life.

In particular, the MCP73862T-I/ML offers an extremely versatile and efficient solution for integrating the battery-charging function into a variety of applications, such as portable medical devices, handheld tactical radios, GPS systems, digital still and video cameras, digital voice recorders, mobile phone and computer peripherals, etc. By utilizing the features of the MCP73862T-I/ML, it is possible to create a highly efficient end-product.
