MCP73863-I/SL is an advanced single-cell, fully-integrated linear Li+ battery charger for portable applications. This highly integrated battery management device is specifically designed for cost-effective systems that requires predictable external components. It has low external components, supports multiple configurations and a miniaturized Small Outline Package, eliminating the need of an expensive heating element and external protections. The device also supports charge current up to 1.5A, very low voltage drop, and low quiescent current.

MCP73863-I/SL is classified as a PMIC - Battery Chargers, since it focuses on providing reliable and accurate charging operations of the Li+ battery. It has constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) type charging, battery temperature monitoring, UVLO with prequalification, charge termination, and fault protection mechanisms.

The primary function of the MCP73863-I/SL is to provide a reliable, accurate and safe charging operations of the Li+ battery. The device operates with input voltages ranging from 4.5 V to 6.5 V, while the battery voltage range is 3.3 V to 4.2 V. It has three charge stages: Pre-qualification, Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV).

At the Pre-qualification stage, the device checks the battery voltage to verify if the battery is connected and to ensure that the battery voltage is above its undervoltage lockout (UVLO) threshold. When the battery voltage exceeds the UVLO threshold, the device enters the CC stage and a constant current is applied to bring the battery up to its charge voltage. Once the battery voltage reaches the voltage setpoint, it enters the CV stage, where battery voltage is maintained at the voltage setpoint through constant voltage regulation.

During all stages, the device constantly monitors battery temperature. If the temperature is outside of the programmed temperature range, the charge cycle is terminated and cannot be resumed unless the temperature returns to its safe limits. The MCP73863-I/SL also contains integrated thermal management and fault protection circuitry. The integrated thermal management reduces external components and the fault protection circuitry prevents possible charger damage.

The MCP73863-I/SL is an ideal choice for applications such as power banks, smart phones, media players, and portable medical devices.
