MCP73864-I/ML is one of a number of power management integrated circuit (PMIC) components designed for battery charge applications. The MCP73864-I/ML is a Lithium-Ion/Polymer battery charge management controller with an integrated power MOSFET. The device is designed to operate with a wide range of Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Polymer battery colors to assure compatibility with most available battery packs. The device utilizes an integrated switch-mode charger architecture, using a high-frequency fixed frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) control loop. This architecture results in a highly efficient (typically > 90%) battery charging solution.
The MCP73864-I/ML features two charging control signals— one for charging and one for preconditioning of the battery. The charging behavior of the device is controlled by an internal charge controller which is programmed via external resistor dividers. The MCP73864-I/ML implements a constant Voltage/Constant Current charge profile and has the ability to program the current limit from 10mA to a full battery capacity of 4A.
