The MCP73864-I/SL Battery Charger (PMIC - Battery Chargers) from Microchip Technology is a family of battery chargers supporting a proprietary adaptive multi-step charging algorithm. The MCP73864-I/SL family of battery chargers offers designers a complete solution for implementing a wide variety of charging architectures.The MCP73864-I/SL application field includes the area designs of low-cost, highly efficient and safe battery charging solutions for smart phones, portable media players, digital cameras, wireless outlets, and other battery-powered products. The MCP73864-I/SL is an advanced single cell Li-ion/Li-polymer charge management controller designed to offer low cost, high efficiency and safe battery charging solutions for smart phones, portable media players, digital cameras, wireless outlets, and other battery-powered products.The MCP73864-I/SL can be used in both constant voltage and constant current charging applications. The charge current and charge voltage are both set through the internal registers. The device can be used in a variety of unregulated wall adaptors, regulated linear adaptors, USB ports, or other charging sources to program current and voltage settings. The MCP73864-I/SL utilizes an adaptive algorithm to maximize charge density while simultaneously optimizing safety and protecting the battery from unsafe operating conditions.The MCP73864-I/SL includes a Proprietary Adaptive Multi-Step Charge Algorithm. This algorithm increases the current in two to four portion steps, allowing an optimum charge while simultaneously protecting the battery from unsafe operating conditions such as over-voltage, over-temperature, and over-current. The device automatically enters the termination stage when optimum charge is completed.The MCP73864-I/SL also has a dedicated Hardware monitoring circuit and a safety timer. This monitoring circuit is capable of monitoring the input voltage, the battery voltage and the temperature. The safety timer keeps track of the for maximum charge time and allows for a terminated cycle, if the maximum time has been exceeded.The open drain N-Channel MOSFET for switching of the charge allows for up to a 2A charging current. An internal thermal sense diode monitors the die temperature, and the MCP73864-I/SL automatically enters thermal shutdown mode to prevent device damage in case of an overtemperature event. The device also allows up to 1.65V (Typical) of external reverse bias voltage it can handle and has an input voltage monitoring range of 4.7V to 6V.The MCP73864-I/SL supports a comprehensive suite of functions, including thermal protection, charge control, charge termination, input voltage regulation, and power diagnostics. This allows for fast and robust implementation of a reliable charging system that is designed to protect not only the battery from unsafe charging conditions, but also to protect the charger itself from over-temperature and over-current conditions.To optimize the charge function and prevent accidental inclusion of an unprotected battery, the MCP73864-I/SL device includes an optional Series Protection FET. The Series Protection FET is an internal MOSFET that can limit the maximum voltage delivered to the battery protection circuit. This feature provides additional protection against an unbounded charge voltage due to an improperly configured input source.In summary, the MCP73864-I/SL Battery Charger provides users with an efficient, safe charging solution that has a variety of programmable battery charging options and MPPT capabilities.
