The charger features an adjustable charge current, programmable charger termination and a selectable linear or switch mode charging topology. The MCP73864T-I/ML implements a selectable linear or switch-mode charging algorithm to charge the battery. The selectable charging algorithm is based on the state of the BAT pin, which is pulled high to force switch-mode charging, or pulled low to enable linear charging. Depending on the algorithm selected, the charger performs different charging functions.At the start of the charge cycle, the charge current is set by the value of a capacitor connected between the input and output of the Charge Current Set pin (CCS). When the BAT pin is pulled high, switch-mode charging is enabled and the Charger generates two phases of pulse width modulation (PWM) pulses, which increase or decrease the charge current based on the battery\'s state of charge.When the BAT pin is pulled low, linear charging is enabled. In this mode, the charge current is set by the resistance between the CCS and ground, and the charger monitors the current by measuring the voltage across the CCS. When the battery reaches a full charge, the charge termination is set by the voltage of the Termination pin (TERM), with a typical voltage of 4.2V. When the Termination voltage is reached, the charger stops supplying current to the battery and switches to the trickle charging mode.Conclusion
