The MCP73871T-4CAI/ML is a battery charger IC for single cell Li-Ion/Li-Po batteries. It is designed for use in a wide range of portable applications, and is ideal for low-cost and space-constrained solution designs. MCP73871T-4CAI/ML is an advanced linear charging solution with integrated current sensing and current limiting that eliminates the need for costly external components.

The device offers two charge modes, Constant-Current/Constant-Voltage (CC/CV) and Constant-Current/Constant-Preset Charge (CC/PC), for Li-ion/Li-Po battery charging. The CC/CV operating mode provides controlled charging current, constant voltage regulation and charging termination. The CC/PC operating mode provides constant current regulation, adjustable current limit and charging termination via an internal timer.

The MCP73871T-4CAI/ML also features integrated thermal control monitoring and gating of MOSFET,Status bits for charge mode, charge current and charge voltage to support system firmware/software control program.It includes electronic hot line protection to reduce system cost and board space. The MCP73871T-4CAI/ML comes in a space-saving SOT-25 package, made of lead-free, Pb-free materials and is Halogen free/BFR free.

Working Principle:

The MCP73871T-4CAI/ML features two specific charge regulation modes, Constant-Current/Constant-Voltage (CC/CV) and Constant-Current/Constant-Preset Charge (CC/PC). The CC/CV mode offers controlled charging current, constant voltage regulation and charging termination, while the CC/PC mode offers constant current regulation, adjustable current limit and charging termination via an internal timer.

In the CC/CV mode, the battery charger utilizes a single SenseFET switch which is used to control the battery current and the battery voltage. The charge current is regulated by a sense resistor which is connected between the Battery terminals and the TOP and BOT pins of the battery charger IC. The charge current is maintained by varying the gate voltage of the SenseFET. The battery voltage is regulated by adjusting the gate voltage of the SenseFET.

In the CC/PC mode, the battery charger utilizes a two SenseFET switch arrangement to set the battery charge current. The two SenseFET switches are connected with a resistor network and the current flows between the two sense FET switches through the resistor network. The charge current is regulated by the resistor network connected between the TOP and BOT pins of the battery charger IC. The battery voltage is regulated by adjusting the gate voltage of the SenseFET switches. The charge termination is set by an internal timer.
