Thyristors - SCRs

A Silicon Controlled Rectifier, or SCR, is a four-layer device made up of alternating P and N type layers of silicon. It is an electronic switch that is switched ON by means of an externally applied gate signal. The gate-controlled switch is often used as a means of controlling a higher voltage or current using a smaller gate voltage/current. SCRs have a wide range of applications, from power switching to time-delay protection devices.

MCR8DCMT4G Application Field and Working Principle

The MCR8DCMT4G is a Thyristor-Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) manufactured mainly for automotive control applications in Powertrain systems. It is used in the control of loads with up to 400A continuous current and up to 600A intermittent current ratings. It can provide protection from short-circuits, over-voltage, over-current and overload scenarios.

The MCR8DCMT4G operates in three basic modes: Forward/On, Reverse/Off and Blocking/Off. In the Forward/On mode, current passes through the device in one direction, similar to a diode. In the Reverse/Off mode, the SCR will block current from passing through it in either direction. In the Blocking/Off mode, the SCR will reset itself following a current overload.

The MCR8DCMT4G includes an integrated switch-disconnect circuit that prevents the SCR from conducting current when the voltage exceeds the rated voltage. It also contains a series of protection diodes to prevent reverse current damage. For an external current overload, the device has an external starter resistor which allows current to be limited in the event of an overload.

The MCR8DCMT4G can be used in a variety of applications, including automotive, critical power, switched-mode power supplies, motor control, UPS/SMPS, solar power, and variable-speed drive control. Its triple semiconductor construction makes it suitable for high-power applications and its reverse blocking capability makes it suitable for critical power applications. The MCR8DCMT4G provides reliable and efficient operation and can operate at high temperatures due to its thermally enhanced, low-inductive package.

The operating principle of the MCR8DCMT4G is that it takes a small voltage/current (i.e. the gate signal) for its operation. When the gate voltage/current is applied, it turns ON the SCR and allows current to flow through the device. When the gate voltage/current is reduced or removed, the SCR turns OFF, blocking the current. It is a simple, yet effective, device that is used to control higher voltage/currents using smaller gate voltage/current.
