Thyristors are a type of semiconductor device which consists of three or four layers of semiconductor material that are sandwiched together in an alternating pattern and controlled by an external voltage source. The most important member of the thyristor family is the silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), which is commonly referred to simply as the thyristor. The thyristor has been around since the 1960s, and has become a staple in many industries due to its solid-state switching abilities.
The MCR8SMG, also known as “smart-gate”, is a member of the thyristor family which is developed based on the MCR8SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) thyristor. It is used in intelligent switchgear, which are electric switches associated with the control of an electric power system and designed to provide protection against faults, overloads and other problems that can occur in a power system. The MCR8SMG is a variation of the SCR which features a “smart-gate” operation that allows the user to change the operating voltage of the thyristor from a distance using a voltage input terminal.
The MCR8SMG is a two-terminal thyristor which has three layers of semiconductor material with opposite polarities. The layers are connected together by a thin layer of insulation, referred to as the “oximide Cathode”. This cathode layer is critical in triggering the operation of the device. The thickness of the Cathode layer is optimized to provide the highest efficiency and lower temperature operation of the thyristor.
The working principle of an MCR8SMG is based on applying an external voltage to the gate of the thyristor. When the gate voltage exceeds the forward voltage threshold, it triggers the thyristor to an “On-State”, allowing current to flow between the two electrodes. The thyristor then stays in the on-state until the current drops to a certain level (called the “holding current”) or the gate voltage is removed. The device then returns to the off-state.
The MCR8SMG is mainly used in the control and protection of medium- and high-power rectifiers, AC - DC converters, UPS systems, AC reactors, and other electrical systems, where reliable voltage control and protection is desired. It is able to provide a high level of performance, autodetection and short-circuit protection, as well as improved system efficiency and energy conservation.
In summary, the MCR8SMG is a type of thyristor specifically designed to provide superior voltage control, protection, and reliability to industrial and commercial applications. The smart-gate operation allows the user to undervoltage or overvoltage the thyristor from a remote location, making it an ideal choice for industrial automation. The MCR8SMG is capable of providing outstanding switching performance and efficiency, making it an ideal choice for applications where cost efficiency and reliability are important.
