Power semiconductors are increasingly being chosen over traditional control devices due to their enhanced reliability, greater efficiency, and the ability to provide more precise control. In order to drive this power-intensive devices, gate drivers are often used.

A gate driver is a device that shares the switching function between the control circuit and the power device. Gate drivers use minimal power to efficiently alternately charge and discharge the gate capacitance of a power device, usually a MOSFET or IGBT. This sends a high current charge/discharge signal to the gate electrode of a target power device, controlling its switching on or off. The MIC4128YME-TR is a monolithic gate driver from Microchip Technology. To achieve this, the MOSFET/IGBT gate is connected to the waveform generator internal to the IC, and a PWM signal is sent to the waveform generator to control the gate charge/discharge waveform. The waveform generator output is able to precisely control both the Output Update Time (tOUT) and the Output Hold-Off Time (tHOLD), allowing the user to fine tune the switching of the power devices.

The MIC4128YME-TR also features several protective functions. The device is designed to protect against low or high input and output voltages. It also includes short circuit protection and over-temperature protection. This ensures reliable and safe operation, even under extreme conditions.
