The MIC4421ACN has been designed and introduced by Micrel Incorporated as an advanced power management IC for related applications due to its features such as an independent auxiliary supply (up to 65V) and a low input/output impedance resulting from a high drive current capability. In other words, this device is a combination of three systems, a voltage regulation system, a protection system, and a high speed switching system, providing various benefits to the user. The primary purpose of the MIC4421ACN is to provide high speed switching and drive capability in a wide assortment of applications. The MIC4421ACN is available in an 8-pin SO package and operates over an extended temperature range of –40°C to 125°C. The IC also meets the requirements of various safety standards such as CSA and EN60950. The SW, ASSY, and UART pins are all connected internally, making the connection easy, while the auxiliary input can be connected anywhere on the board.

The switching principle of the MIC4421ACN is based on the selectable non-overlapping gate driver (SONG) architecture. This is a three-stage, non-overlapping gate driver that provides synchronized control from power supply to control supply. The IC is designed to reduce the switching losses and improves the overall device reliability; it is also enabled for quick and easy fault diagnosis in case of an unexpected behavior. The SONG architecture is designed to reduce the turn-off transistor’s voltage stress, allowing for greater flexibility of the design.

This advanced IC also features an independent bias supply that can support up to 65V. This allows for a constant current limiting, regardless of the operating voltage, avoiding over-current conditions. The IC also has an integrated Active Discharge (AD) circuitry, which reduces the floating power dissipation in the turned-off state, leading to a reduction in power losses in the overall system.
