MIC4424BN Application Field and Working Principle

Introduction

Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) are semiconductor devices that convert, store, regulate and distribute electrical energy. They are designed to reduce the number of components needed for a given circuit by combining risky tasks into a safe and efficient package. Gate drivers are a subset of PMICs designed to produce voltage or current signals to control the threshold of power transistors, providing intermediate voltage and current isolation. One of these gate drivers is the MIC4424BN, which is a high-voltage, low-cost gate driver IC with a fast GPIO and low-side switch.

MIC4424BN Application Field

The MIC4424BN was designed to be used in a variety of applications such as automotive, lighting, industrial, HVAC and aerospace. It is a single package wide-industry regulator with a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 50 V and an output voltage of up to 350 V. The MIC4424BN can drive both low-side MOSFETs and bipolar transistors with a low output impedance and fast response time. MIC4424BN Working Principle

The MIC4424BN operates in a system with a high side control signal and a low side control signal to control both low-side MOSFETs and bipolar transistors. When the system is on, the high side signal starts the power stage and the low side signal activates the active low side switch. The MIC4424BN regulates output voltage by adjusting the gate voltage of the device. The output gate voltage is then adjusted with regards to the current demanded by the device to provide optimal performance.The MIC4424BN consists of two parts, the high side and low side driver. The high side driver consists of 3 stages: pre-driver, driver circuit and output stage. The pre-driver is a low-power driver circuit that converts the input signal into logic level signals, which can be directly connected to the driver circuit. The driver circuit amplifies the pre-driver output and provides quick response time, high current capacity and low output resistance. The output stage accepts the output signal from the driver and then supplies the necessary voltage and current to the gate of the powered device. The low side driver consists of a low-side switch and optional logic gates. The low-side switch consists of an input signal and output transistors. The input signal is used to enable or disable the low-side switch and the output transistors are used to control the current in the powered device. The optional logic gates allow the user to select different logic thresholds for the input signal to enable or disable the low-side switch.The MIC4424BN also has protection features built-in such as thermal shutdown and over-voltage protection for both low side and high side switches. The thermal shutdown disconnects the IC from the load when the chip temperature exceeds a certain limit and the over-voltage protection ensures that the transistors don’t be damaged by excessive voltages.
