A supervisor integrated circuit (IC) is a specialty IC that is used in systems that require controlled power-on reset or power-good reset monitoring. The MIC706SM is an excellent example of an available supervisor IC. Traditional supervisor ICs are used mainly for two purposes. The first is providing a reset signal to the microcontroller when the reset is required due to power-up of the system or a low-voltage brown-out condition. The second purpose is for providing a power-good signal when the supply voltage has reached the proper operational level. The MIC706SM does both of these tasks, but with a new more efficient design.
The MIC706SM application field is wide, ranging from communications and consumer products to industrial, computer and medical applications. It is well suited for low voltage embedded microprocessor systems where low power dissipation and small size are important. Its most common use is in providing reset signals to microcontrollers, such as those found in computers, embedded systems, industrial automation and telecommunications equipment.
The MIC706SM is a low-power reset and power-good supervisor. Its main purpose is providing a reset signal to the microcontroller when the power-up of the system is required or a low-voltage brown-out condition is encountered. It also serves as a power-good signal generator that indicates when the supply voltage has reached the proper operational level.
The MIC706SM can be used in both active-low and active-high reset configurations and is typically used in systems that operate from 3.0V to 5.5V. It has an open-drain output pin, which can be connected to an external pull-up resistor for active-low reset applications. Alternatively, the open-drain output pin can be connected to a pull-down resistor for active-high reset applications.
The MIC706SM runs on a very low supply current of only 15uA (typical) and features an internal reset timer. The reset timer ensures that the reset output is asserted for at least the time specified in the datasheet. This time is typically set at 200ms, but can be adjusted by connecting an external capacitor to the timer pin. The MIC706SM also has an active-low power-good output pin, which indicates the state of the power supplies. When the supply voltage reaches or exceeds the specified thresholds, the power-good output is asserted and the reset output is de-asserted.
The MIC706SM also has an adjustable reset threshold and an adjustable power-good threshold. These adjustable voltage thresholds allow the system designer to configure the MIC706SM for different power supply and load conditions. The reset threshold can be adjusted by connecting an external resistor and capacitor to the reset threshold pin. The power-good threshold can be adjusted by connecting an external resistor to the power-good threshold pin.
The MIC706SM also features a programmable delay to ensure that the reset signal is asserted for a minimum amount of time. This programmable delay is adjustable from 10ms to 10s using an external resistor. The MIC706SM is also capable of providing an open drain reset output for higher levels of circuit integration.
The MIC706SM is available in a 16-pin TSSOP package and is rated for a temperature range of –40°C to +85°C. Overall, the MIC706SM provides an efficient, low power and small size solution for embedded microprocessor systems and other applications requiring a reset and power-good supervision circuit.
