Motion Sensors - Accelerometers
The MMA1260D is a digital tri-axis dynamic acceleration sensor from Freescale Semiconductor. It is a high precision 5V powered DC accelerometer designed to measure linear acceleration from -9.8m/s2 to +9.8m/s2. It is a low cost, low power and low profile sensor ideal for consumer applications such as mouse and game pad tracking, industrial monitoring, and gaming system motion control.
Application Field
MMA1260D accelerometers can be applied in various application fields due to its low power consumption and wide dynamic range. Sensors can be found in notebook PCs and mice for system navigation, laptop PCs and gaming consoles for gaming control, laptops and PDAs for cursor control, and touchpads for motion detection and pointing.
MMA1260D also has a variety of industrial applications, such as machines and tools vibration monitoring, vibration analysis systems, transportation, seismic monitoring systems, shock and impact testing, and medical motion measurement. Furthermore, when combined with the Freescale KL25Z microcontroller, it can be used to create a high-efficiency single-chip flight control system, providing advanced features to electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Working Principle
The MMA1260D consists of a cap piezoelectric sensor which is operated in a variable capacitance mode in response to acceleration. It also contains an ASIC integrated circuit (IC), which amplifies the electrical output of the piezoelectric element and helps to convert the system into a digitalsignal. The output of the ASIC is a digital pulse width modulated (PWM) signal for each axis.
The PWM signals are then processed by an algorithm in the Freescale KL25Z microcontroller and converted into acceleration in the X/Y/Z directions. The accelerometer also contains two comparators and two additional ADC channels. One of the comparators is used to detect if the acceleration is larger than a particular threshold, while the other can detect if the acceleration is less than a particular threshold. The ADC channels can be used to measure temperature and to set parameters for the alarm threshold and hysteresis.
The MMA1260D is equipped with an 8-bit SPI-compatible digital interface, allowing for the transmission of digital messages between the system and the host microcontroller. This makes it easy to integrate this sensor into a large variety of system designs. The sensor is also designed to be immune to external electrical and magnetic fields, providing reliable performance in harsh environments.
