Accelerometers, as their name suggests, are types of motion sensors designed to measure acceleration—the rate of change in the speed of an object in a particular direction—over time. As such, they have a wide range of applications in motion control in a variety of industries from automotive to agriculutre. One particular accelerometer is worth highlighting for its applications: the MMA1725W. In this article, we\'ll discuss the applications and working principles of this accelerometer.
The MMA1725W accelerometer is a high-precision, tri-axial digital accelerometer pre-configured to measure acceleration (tilt) in three spatial directions (X, Y, and Z axes). Equipped with an internal temperature compensation system, the MMA1725W accelerometer offers the utmost accuracy when measuring bipolar angles up to ±35° and can do so across a wide temperature range (from -20°C to 70°C). For this reason, the MMA1725W accelerometer is widely used in the automotive, aerospace, medical, and agricultural industries for applications such as crash monitoring, anti-rollover sensing, vibration suppression, unmanned aerial vehicle guidance, and precision navigation.
In terms of its working principle, the MMA1725W accelerometer is based on a capacitive MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) structure. When a MEMS accelerometer such as this one detects vibrations, accelerations, or changes in direction, a weight mounted on a movable platform moves due to the acceleration force. This movement changes the distance between the fixed electrodes and the weight, which in turn changes the capacitance between the electrodes and the weight. This change in capacitance is converted to a proportional electrical signal using a MEMS processing circuit. This signal can then be fed into a control system to detect and measure the acceleration of an object in motion.
Furthermore, in order to minimize interference from electromagnetic fields and other sources, the MMA1725W accelerometer is equipped with a TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheet) Electromagnetic Interference Cancelling Technology which reduces the noise floor by up to 10x. Additionally, the structure of the internal MEMS processing circuit is further optimized to support a wide range of applications including low-power consumption and remote sensing. Finally, the accelerometer can also be powered up quickly from a normal MCU releasing power-up time to as little as 0.5ms.
