MOC3021SVM (MOC3021 Silent Voltage Monitor) is an optoisolator designed to drive SCR and Triac applications with real-time triggering. This type of input optocoupler offers the possibility of implementing an extensive range of isolated switch control systems, from PWM to switching ACload power control configurations. Its degree of isolation is reinforced by advanced high-voltage and insulation technologies.
The MOC3021SVM features a chip that uses an internal zero-crossing power detector and dual input pins, yielding a precise zero-crossing voltage detection with a tolerance of less than 1.5% of the peak voltage at any point in the cycle. When the MOC3021SVM receives an enable signal at its dual input, an SCR or Triac gate drive signal is provided. This provides the needed gate current to turn on the SCR or TRIAC in both AC line and load current direction. The optocoupler chip is housed in a dual in-line (DIP) package and the integrated high-voltage/insulation technologies make it ideal for applications requiring higher isolation.
The main application field of the MOC3021SVM is the AC load switching control. This optocoupler can be used to control a variety of AC loads, such as motors, heating elements, lamps, solid-state controllers, etc. The device is also suitable for power supplies, motor drives, and lamp ballast control systems. The MOC3021SVM is ideal for applications where low power dissipation, high transient immunity, and stable AC switching performance are desired.
The isolation between input and output of the MOC3021SVM is based on an optically coupled photo transistor. The input is an LED which operates when a signal is applied at its dual input. This input is then isolated from the output, which is the SCR or TRIAC gate drive signal. The LED light detected by the photosensitive transistor, which triggers the SCR or TRIAC gate, allows AC load switching control.
