MOC3023FM is a unipolar Bidirectional, Phototriac Driver Optocoupler integrated circuit (IC) that works as an isolator for electrical circuits. The device consists of an infrared light-emitting diode (LED), which is optically coupled to a solid-state output phototriac device. The optocoupler isolates the device circuitry from the external circuit, protecting it from voltage transients and magnetic fields.

MOC3023FM is primarily used in resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads applications, such as those found in telecommunications, lighting, and motor control circuits. The working principle of the MOC3023FM is simple. Its main components are a photo-triac, LED and resistors. The internal resistors set the LED current, and the phototriac then latches when it is exposed to enough light. When a logic low is applied to the LED, its current-limiting resistor limits the LED’s current to a safe level. This current causes the LED to emit light, and the phototriac then latches and turns on, allowing power to flow through the load. When the LED current is removed, the light is no longer present and the phototriac unlatches and turns off.

The MOC3023FM is ideal for industrial applications that require low-power consumption and high-reliability. Its low-current output mode reduces the need for extra power circuitry, while its high insulation resistance ensures reliable operation in even the most demanding environments. The optocoupler has been tested and is certified for operational temperatures between -40°C to +105°C (-40°F to 221°F), making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
