Introduction

Operation

The MSMBJ14CA is an integrated multilayer protection device that consists of two separate diodes in series as shown in Figure 1. During normal operation, the MSMBJ14CA behaves as a typical diode with a low forward voltage drop. This means that the voltage across the device is equal to the forward voltage drop of the diode (typically around 0.7V). However, when presented with a transient voltage greater than the breakdown voltage of the device, the MSMBJ14CA operates as a voltage clamp. This results in limiting the voltage across the device to the breakdown voltage, thereby protecting the system.

The breakdown voltage for the MSMBJ14CA is specified to be 14V with a maximum peak power dissipation of 14W. The device also includes several features such as the soft recovery time (CL – Closed Loop), temperature stability and ESD protection. The CL feature helps to reduce the surge current by providing an active control of the voltage transient. The temperature stability ensures that the device remains within the specified ratings.
