TVS - Diodes

TVS (transient voltage suppressors) diodes are one of the most important electronic components in the field of power control systems. A TVS diode is an active component that acts as a voltage excitation device. It is designed to rapidly and safely dissipate excess voltage from an electrical system due to a brief overload or electrical fault. When exposed to a large voltage pulse, a TVS diode will quickly reduce it to a safe voltage level that is below a predetermined value.TVS diodes offer protection from high-voltage surges, over voltage spikes, and electrical interference. TVS diodes can also protect against lower frequency spikes caused by inductive load switching and motor drive transients.The MSMBJ18CA/TR provides dual low-capacitance, low-clamping voltage protection for devices. This type of diode is designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients. It is a small, surface-mount Silicon avalanche diode with a maximum peak pulse power of 450 watts and a peak non-repetitive current of 400 amperes. This protects the device against transients with a low-clamping voltage and a capacitance of 8pF per device.The working principle of the MSMBJ18CA/TR is simple. It is connected between the supply voltage and the load, and when a transient voltage exceeds its threshold voltage, it begins to conduct current and absorb the energy of the transient. The energy is then dissipated through the junction in the form of heat. The clamping voltage of the device is determined by its capacitance, and the higher the capacitance is, the lower the threshold voltage.When the transient is of a lower frequency, the MSMBJ18CA/TR absorbs the energy and dissipates it over a shorter time to protect the device against the transient.
