TVS (transient voltage suppression) diodes are increasingly being used in consumer electronics, military and industrial equipment. Their primary purpose is to absorb voltage transients or surges, which are sudden increases in voltage caused by events such as lightning, power line faults and electrostatic discharge (ESD). The MSMBJ85CA is a member of the Multi-Element Suppression Diode (MESD) family developed by ON Semiconductor.
