TVS - Diodes

Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes are compact,high-speed, efficient, reliable and cost-effective devices designedto protect equipment from overloads and short circuits in a varietyof circuit applications. They are generally used to protect printedcircuit boards and integrated circuit (IC) from overvoltage transients(like ESD), lightning transients and line transients. TVS diodes aremade of a variety of materials and processes. The most commonmaterials are crystalline, GaAs, polysilicon, and gallium nitride.

MSMBJSAC5.0/TR Application Field and Working Principle

MSMBJSAC5.0/TR TVS diodes protect circuits from transientvoltage spikes. They employ two guarding mechanisms to protectthe circuit: surge clamping and crowbar. In surge clamping,the voltage spike is limited by the circuit to a length dictatedby the clamp voltage. In crowbar protection, the TVS diodebreaks the flow of current through the circuit and passesthe voltage spike to ground, protecting the circuit from itseffects. TVS diodes are suitable for a variety of general-purpose problems, including protecting appliance motors,DC power supply products, communications equipment, andindustrial automation equipment.

MSMBJSAC5.0/TR TVS diodes use two types of technology:unipolar and bipolar. Both types of technologies involve a layer ofmetal-semiconductor-insulator material sandwiched between twometal contacts. Unipolar technology relies on a single layer ofsemiconductor material to turn the diode on and off. Bipolar technologyuses two layers of semiconductor material to achieve the same effect.The junction of the two layers form the p-n junction, which allowsthe device to rectify in either direction.

The working principle of MSMBJSAC5.0/TR TVS diodes isbased on a very simple concept: a voltage spike is applied tothe diode, which is passed through a clamp voltage. Whenthe voltage reaches the set threshold level, the diode triggersa crowbar, breaking the circuit and diverting the spike to ground.This protects the circuit from potential damage.
