TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes are special diodes designed to effectively protect sensitive electronics from electrostatic discharge, voltage spikes, and other voltage transients. The MSMCJ24CA/TR is a unidirectional, low-capacitance silicon TVS diode optimized for high-speed systems. The MSMCJ24CA/TR diode’s working principle is based on the fact that when a high voltage transient (greater than the diode’s breakdown voltage rating) is applied across its terminals, the diode’s internal junction is quickly “triggered” into a semi-conduction state. In this mode, a large amount of current is able to flow through the diode, allowing the transient energy to be dissipated as it passes through the diode. Since the diode conducts current in both directions, the transient is effectively “shunted” away from the circuit and shunted to ground. Once the transient event passes, the diode’s internal junction returns to its non-conducting state, resuming its protection of the circuit.

The MSMCJ24CA/TR diode is available in an SMA package that is very compact and easy to mount onto a circuit board in a variety of layouts. The device is rated for temperatures between -65°C and 150°C and features a rated lifetime expectancy of up to 100,000 ESD pulses. It is a great device for protecting sensitive electronics in a variety of low voltage applications, and is especially well suited for high frequency data transmission applications.
