The MTZJT-725.1B is a single Zener diode commonly used for voltage regulation in power supplies or for biasing bipolar transistors. It contains a single PN junction and works on the principle of reverse voltage breakdown by using a high resistance layer strategically located at the junction. This layer, often referred to as the Zener region, creates an electric barrier which prevents current from flowing through the PN junction until a certain break down voltage is applied.

It is an epitaxial P-type semiconductor component which offers a maximum Zener voltage of 7.25 volts. The maximum reverse current at which the breakdown occurs is 500mW with a maximum reverse voltage of 8.25 volts. The device has a low maximum leakage current of 200µA and an average junction capacitance of 15 pF. It has a fairly high reverse power rating of 30W and a very low forward voltage drop of 0.75V.

The MTZJT-725.1B is used in a variety of applications including linear voltage regulators, switched-mode power supplies, power separator circuits and overvoltage protection. In linear voltage regulators, the Zener diode serves to increase or decrease the output voltage level by using the diode as a clamp.
