Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors use a porous anode made of an aluminum oxide which is initially formed by anodic oxidation of the anode foil. The oxide has a higher dielectric constant than aluminum foil, enabling large capacitance values to be achieved with small aluminium foils. The thickness of the aluminum foil is usually 0.03 mm to 0.012 mm and the large surface area and small foil thickness enable high capacitance levels per unit volume. The aluminum oxide acts as a dielectric layer between the anode and the cathode.
