Working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitor
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors consist of an anode (positive electrode) and a cathode (negative electrode) with a common oxide film of aluminum as a dielectric (dielectric). An electrolyte, usually an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, helps to form a negative oxide film on the anode surface. The oxide film has a certain dielectric constant and a certain capacitance.When a positive voltage is applied between the anode and the cathode, an electric field is generated near the interface of the oxide film and the electrolyte, attracting the positive ions in the electrolyte to move towards the anode. At the same time, the negative ions move towards the cathode. This movement of ions produces an additional amount of positive charge on the anode and an additional amount of negative charge on the cathode, so that a nominal DC voltage can be applied between the anode and the cathode.When the capacitor is disconnected from power supply, the ions will return to their original positions and charge on the anode and the cathode will also be reduced.
