NCP1406SNT1G is a single-ended stepped-down switch mode DC-DC converter IC(integrated circuit) typically used for power supply designs in the field of portable andsmall electronics. It belongs to the family of PMIC (Power Management ICs) VoltageRegulators and more specifically to DC-DC Switching Regulators. This IC can provideexcellent performance and small size by combining its very low current consumption andhigh efficiency.

NCP1406SNT1G is primarily developed for operates with batteries, super capacitorsand other low-voltage sources. It is primarily optimized for applications in the field ofpower-hungry high-performance audio applications and other ultra-low noise operationmodes.

It is designed to provide a perfect replacement for the existing DC-DC converters andprovides even higher switching efficiency up to 98%. Its 3V-18V input and 0.7V-14V outputrange offers extreme flexibility and makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.

In addition, NCP1406SNT1Ghas an active reset and power-on reset circuitry which provides a “One shot start up” behavior. This ensuresa correct start of the switching regulator even under low-voltage conditions.

The working principle of the NCP1406SNT1G is based on the Buck-Boost topology. This topologyenables wide input and output voltage ranges, steep input and output voltage slopes and high switchingfrequencies.

In its basic form, a Buck-Boost topology takes a high input voltage V1 and steps it down through a series of electrical components. This creates the input voltage for a coupled Boost converter which takes this low voltage V2 and boosts it to a higher output V3. The NCP1406SNT1G implementssimply this same principle of a Buck-Boost topology circuitry.

At the heart of the NCP1406SNT1G is an internal switch that is used to control the Buck-Boostswitching circuit. This internal switch is controlled by an internal voltage regulator. The input voltage V1 isthen stepped down by a series of resistors and capacitors and sent to the Boost converter. The Boostconverter then boosts the voltage V2 to the desired output voltage V3. This Boost converter includes aswitch and an integral boost diode, allowing for precisely regulated output voltage.

NCP1406SNT1G also includes reverse polarity protection circuitry that helps protect the ICfrom damaging transient voltages. There are also several other protection circuits that protect the overallswitching circuit and the output of the IC. These protection circuits ensure that the IC is alwaysoperating in optimal conditions.
