The NCP1421EVB, an evaluation board for a PWM controller IC, is used to study and assemble Off-Line Small, Medium and High Power DC/DC and AC/DC supplies. This Evaluation Board, with its adaptable hardware, flexibility for power DIP packages and the preparation of different types of circuits with the comprehensive schematic, offers designers with a method to reduce the time of development, reduce the instrumentation costs, and obtain the best solution to build SMPS System.The NCP1421EVB implements a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control IC in either an 8-pin DIP version or an 8-pin SOIC version. This particular IC is a current-mode controller, which uses a voltage feedback system to regulate output voltage. Its many features, such as the overvoltage protection (OVP), non-overlapping control of an external MOSFET or IGBT and phase shift control at zero voltage switching (ZVS) on its secondary, make it a particularly suitable controller IC for SMPS applications. The NCP1421EVB Evaluation Board can be used as an off-line switching power supply for loads ranging from 20 W up to ~250 W, thus achievable as a flyback or forward SMPS topology. This wide range of power can be achieved by either using an external switching power device (MOSFET or IGBT) of corresponding power rating or by using multiple low power power devices (MOSFET/IGBT) connected in parallel.The NCP1421EVB is configured to work with DC/DC and AC/DC supplies, but is also suitable for AC/DC bridge rectifiers and simple boost converters. It features a wide input voltage range from 85 VAC to 265 VAC and an output-voltage range of 0.8 V to 56 V. The main components of the NCP1421EVB have been selected so that the board can run as a standalone, but they can also be adjusted to meet the user\'s design changes.Working with the NCP1421 is very easy, as the user manual states that just a few connections are enough to power the board and use its intended range of output voltage. The main components used in the NCP1421EVB board, which include the transformer, filter capacitor, MOSFET or IGBT transistor, optocoupler, and voltage regulator, are all easily accessible and adjustable.Each of these main components offers adjustable values, depending on the requirement of the output voltage, current, and power handling capacity. This makes the NCP1421EVB suitable for using with different loads, ranging from small adapters for light lamps up to high-power medical equipment.The main evaluating factor of the NCP1421EVB is the combination of the IC and the external components, all coordinated to render a high quality output voltage with minimum power loss. The green LED indicates that all the external components are in good working condition and that the board can run in the intended range without any problem.The NCP1421EVB also contains a built-in thermal protection circuit which is activated when the temperature of the board reaches 150°C.
