PMIC - Voltage Regulators - LinearThe NCP502SQ50T2G is a voltage regulator for applications in the linear voltage regulation space. It is part of ON Semiconductor’s family of linear voltage regulator integrated circuits. Specifically, this voltage regulator, the NCP502SQ50T2G (herein referred to as the NCP502), is classified as a low dropout regulator.The NCP502 is designed to provide a fixed output voltage (Vo) to the power line of a system. With an output voltage of 5.0 V and an input voltage range of minimum 2.6 V to maximum 6 V, the NCP502 maintains a low dropout voltage of just 1.2 V with a very tight output voltage tolerance of ±2%. The NCP502 ensures very low output noise with an output impedance of no more than 23 mΩ. The NCP502 also features fast transient response with a loop response time better than 50 μs.  The NCP502 is also capable of sourcing a maximum output current of up to 50mA, with an output current capability of 200mA in the overload condition. The NCP502 is a single-package device requiring very few external components for operation. This makes it an ideal solution for space-restricted settings. It requires only an input and output capacitor pair (C1 and C2 respectively) that can be inserted between the isolation capacitors C1 and C2. A discrete resistor placed between pin 6 and the sense pin adjusts the redirection of the output voltage. The linear design of the NCP502 provides a low noise output and low total cost BOM. In addition, the NCP502 offers low shut-down current, light load synchronization, and lower voltage drift. A key feature of the NCP502 is the high level of performance available in both the light load and low input voltage states. Low input power operation is enabled in light load conditions with its Burst ModeTM operation. The NCP502’s Burst ModeTM is a pulse-skipping technique designed to reduce power consumption in light load operation. It achieves this by reducing the switching frequency or turning off the regulator in light load conditions. This circuit offers up to 80% savings in power versus a standard PWM method. The NCP502SQ50T2G is ideal for a wide range of power regulation applications. It is suitable for use in communications systems, such as those for security monitoring systems, as well as for industrial applications. Its wide input voltage range, low dropout voltage, fast transient response, and low BOM requirement make it an attractive option for many applications requiring an efficient and reliable voltage regulator.
