NCP512SQ15T1 Working Principle
The NCP512SQ15T1 is basically a Linear Voltage Regulator (LVR) with an on-chip voltage reference, error amplifier, and pass element. This device controls the output voltage by sensing the output current with a current-sense resistor. The current-sense resistor senses the voltage drop across itself as a result of current flowing through the device and outputs a control voltage. The control voltage is then compared to the internal voltage reference and an error amplifier is used to compare the two voltages. If the output voltage does not match the desired voltage, the error amplifier will adjust the control voltage by increasing or decreasing the base current of the pass transistor. The pass transistor then adjusts the output current and in turn the output voltage. This process is known as voltage regulation and this is the basic working principle of the NCP512SQ15T1.
