NCP553SQ50T1 Application Field and Working PrincipleNCP553SQ50T1 is a linear regulator from ON Semiconductor, a fully integrated and monolithic high voltage floating voltage regulator featuring output current capabilities up to 1 A and an adjustable output voltage range of 2.2 V to 50 V. The NCP553SQ50T1 features an internal Foldback Current Limit, programmable current limit, voltage monitoring, and overtemperature protection to protect the IC from overload conditions and short circuit protection.Application FieldsNCP553SQ50T1 can be used in lithium-ion battery powered applications, such as mobile devices and other portable electronics. Its floating output can followed the varying battery output voltage and the linear regulator feature with internal foldback current limit allows the IC to withstand up to 10.0 A output load in a compact 18-pin SOIC package with no additional external circuitry requirements. In addition, NCP553SQ50T1 can also be used as a point of load in automotive applications, including HMI systems and infotainment. The adjustable output voltage range allows for customizing the regulator to the end application, so it can be used to provide power to variety of peripherals.Working PrincipleThe NCP553SQ50T1 is a linear regulator consisting of a voltage reference, error amplifier, and a P-channel pass MOSFET. The IC operates at a high frequency of 500 kHz with a low quiescent current of 80 nA. The voltage reference contains the reference voltage and produces a stable voltage that is compared to the feedback voltage in the inverting input of the error amplifier. Depending on the voltage difference, the output voltage is adjusted accordingly.The error amplifier amplifies the difference between the reference voltage and the output voltage by a gain factor, which is also adjustable via external components. The error amplifier has a data hold/excessive voltage detection, an active low reset output, an over-voltage detection and an under-voltage detection.The P-channel pass MOSFET has an inherent self-protection feature that limits the output current, so in cases of an overload or short-circuit condition, the part will enter a foldback mode to protect all the parts from damage.ConclusionThe NCP553SQ50T1 is a voltage regulator with integrated linear control and a wide adjustable output voltage range.
