The NCP81161MNTWG is a monolithic integrated gate drivers, specially designed for the motor control and load switch applications, such as in motor drivers, half bridge switch drivers and bipolar stepper motor drivers. It can operate on both universal AC and DC (50/60 Hz) input power sources, making it very suitable for home appliances and other applicatons where there are variations in input power supply.

The NCP81161MNTWG has two independent high side and low side channels, which can be driven from 0V up to 15V. It is designed to drive low-side N-channel Mosfets with drain-source voltage up to 50V and currents up to 6A, as well as high-side P-channel Mosfets with drain-source voltage up to 20V and currents up to 3A. It also has two logic inputs, two logic outputs, two fast body diodes, an internal charge pump and a thermal shutdown feature.

The NCP81161MNTWG has two major applications. Firstly, it can be used to drive Mosfets as an output in an H-bridge configuration, where it can drive two Mosfets or one half-bridge (for example, in a DC-DC converter, or a bidirectional voltage regulator). In this configuration, the input logic is used to drive pre-charge and/or discharge FETs. Secondly, it can be used for motor control applications, where the input logic is used to drive the FETs that control the motor. The output logic can then control the motor direction, speed and phase.

The NCP81161MNTWG’s working principle is based on the MOSFET gate drive technology, where the logic inputs and output logic signals control the pre-charge, discharge and low-side/high-side switching of the power MOSFETs. It uses an internally integrated charge pump to generate the higher gate pulse, which is then used to drive the FETs and switch them on and off. The outputs of the high side and low side can be programmed independently and in parallel, and the output logic signals can be used to toggle and change the FETs’ active state. The charge pump can be externally regulated to adjust the gate drive voltage and the amount of current that is driving the FETs. The NCP81161MNTWG is also equipped with a thermal shutting feature – if the FETs become too hot, the device will shut off until it cools down enough.
