NCV8575HDS50G Application Field and Working Principle
NCV8575HDS50G is a member of PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear product family. It is an integrated, pulse frequency modulated (PFM), synchronous buck regulator which features an output current capability that surpasses most of the synchronous buck converters in the industry. It has a 1.2 V to 5.5 V input voltage and provides a non-tracking adjustable voltage output from 0.7 V to 5.5 V.
This product family can be used in various application fields. On one hand, laptops, cellphones, digital cameras, tablets, etc., which often require multiple supply voltages, LCD panels, backlight control, DDR memory and graphic card applications, etc., which need frequent voltage conversions and ultra-low voltage regulation, are the proper application of NCV8575HDS50G. On the other hand, high efficiency, long battery life, data line protection and thermal protection etc also gains benefit from NCV8575HDS50G.
The working principle of NCV8575HDS50G is based on the classic design topology of bit control, pulse width modulation (PWM), synchronous buck converter, the input is filtered by the self-contained filter capacitor and power transistor, and then the PFM controller is used to set the output voltage by constantly changing the duty cycle of the power transistor. The integrated power field effect transistor can operate at frequencies up to 1MHz allowing a flexible design for the specific application.
The controller also contains a power tracker circuit, which provides load regulation of ±1.5% at a typical switching frequency of 1MHz. It also features a slew rate control from 0.8 V/μs to 2 V/μs, adjustable soft start and an adjustable pre-bias voltage. This feature allows the converter to start up at power-on reset right away and make it suitable for USB Power Delivery applications.
Furthermore, the over-current protection (OCP) feature monitors the input current and limits it to 3.2A. If OCP is detected, the current limitation reduces the output voltage to a safe level. The thermal protection (OTP) monitors die temperature and eliminates over-temperature condition. Several features, such as programmable shutdown temperature, short-circuit protection and power-down mode, make NCV8575HDS50G an optimal solution for many applications.
In summary, NCV8575HDS50G is a versatile, highly efficient and cost-effective buck regulator integrating a PFM controller and power FET. The PFM control architecture enables fast transient response times and extended battery life, while the power tracking loop provides tight load regulation performance.
