    The NCV86601BDT33RKG is a monolithic integrated circuit with a high-efficiency, non-synchronous, buck switch-mode power supply (SMPS) and convenience power stage. It works in buck converter to achieve a constant output voltage with the input voltage adjustment within a wide voltage range and current limitation. This IC offers simple applications to efficiently step-down the input voltage between a wide input voltage range. The operators provide flexibility to program different constant output voltage as per the application requirements.

  • Working Principle:

    The NCV86601BDT33RKG device works as a buck converter which has a diode and an input capacitance which is connected in series. The diode is used to block any reverse current flow during the switching process when the output voltage is low. The input capacitor is used to provide extra storage for the input voltage and current when the switching process is taking place. The buck converter also has a power switch which is a high-side power MOSFET that is connected either directly to the ground or to the drain of the buck converter. The power switch is used to control the energy flow within the converter by regulating the on-time of the switch. The on-time depends on the difference between the input voltage and output voltage.

    The output voltage of the buck converter is regulated by a various control schemes. The most common one is the peak current mode control (PCM) where the output voltage is regulated by controlling the output current. The output voltage is then regulated by adjusting the peak current limit values which is then loaded into the current limit register of the converter. The converter then switches the power switch on and off as necessary in order to regulate the output voltage. The buck converter is able to maintain the output voltage in light load conditions by continuously switching the power switch on and off in rapid succession.

    The buck converter is also able to regulate its output voltage with the help of a voltage mode control (VMC). In this control mode, the output voltage is regulated by an error amplifier which compares the feedback voltage with a reference voltage. The error amplifier then outputs a signal which is used to adjust the switching frequency of the power switch in order to regulate the output voltage.
