.Optoisolators are electronic devices, consisting of an input, which is light-sensitive, coupled with an output that operates at electrical isolation. Specifically, the OPI120 is an optoisolator that has a transistor output in conjunction with a photovoltaic diode input. This device is ideal for applications where electrical isolation is desired, or for situations in which a microcontroller is used and which requires a transistor output.
The OPI120 optoisolator offers optically coupled galvanic isolation in a 4 pin DIP package, with a photocell output and a phototransistor input. It is capable of providing up to 2500Vrms input-to-output isolation with a response time of less than 300ns. The operating temperature range is from -40°C to +85°C, with a storage temperature range of -55°C to +125°C.
The OPI120 is designed to be used in industrial, commercial, and automotive applications. Some common applications where it may be used include: controlling a motor from a microcontroller, switching low voltage signals with a high voltage signal, and galvanic isolation of data signals. A few other application examples where this optoisolator may be used are: medical instrumentation, motor controls, and aerospace applications.
The OPI120 device works based on the principle of electrical to optical conversion. First of all, the light-emitting diode, or LED, in the OPI120 emits infrared radiation, which is converted into an electrical signal by the photoresistor that is coupled to it. This signal then turns on the transistor and creates a voltage through the process of electrical conduction. This current can then be used to trigger the transistor switch, which can control other components in the circuit.
In order for the OPI120 to function properly, the LED must be supplied with a current of between 10mA and 100mA. In addition, its current transfer ratio must be above 50. This is the amount of current that the output signal must be able to provide, in order to replace the current that is needed by the input. Lastly, the OPI120 must be able to handle at least 5mA of voltage at its output, in order to trigger the transistor switch.
