Thyristors are commonly used to control electric motors, lights, and other electrical equipment, and are often used in power supplies, signal conditioning, and other power applications. They are basically single-pole, double-throw, solid state devices, meaning they can open and close a circuit upon receipt of a certain signal. A Thyristor is in essence a three-layer semiconductor device, consisting of two P-N junctions connected and arranged in a back-to-back configuration. It is controlled by a signal applied between gate and cathode, and when the gate current exceeds a predetermined level, the Thyristor will switch ‘on’, and conducts current from the anode to the cathode.
The P1800EAL is a Thyristor and, as with other Thyristors, the P1800EAL has the unique property of storing a static charge above a certain external DC voltage. Typically, when this voltage is reached, the gate current is turned off, and the resistance of the device suddenly increases from a few hundred ohms to several thousand ohms. This sudden change in resistance forces the external voltage to decrease rapidly, which in turn forces the gate current to increase, thus causing the device to turn on in a manner known as "charge-balance". The P1800EAL is often used in AC power control applications, because its unique design characteristics allow it to provide stable current flow and voltage regulation.
In application, the P1800EAL is used for switching both AC and DC power. With AC power, it is used to control a three-phase machine. When a signal is applied to the gate connection, the Thyristor will start conducting and then turn off at the appropriate time. It is also used in DC power control applications, where it is used to regulate voltage levels. Here, the device can be connected between points in the DC power supply and can be used to either increase or decrease the level of power provided.
The P1800EAL also has the ability to modulate current, making it useful for voltage regulation applications. It can be configured as a current regulator, allowing it to limit or regulate the amount of current in a circuit.
