PTC Resettable Fuses

A PTC Resettable Fuse, is a type of electrical fuse used to protect electrical circuits from excessive current and short-circuit protection. It is a self- contained device that has no moving parts and does not require replacement after an overload or fault occurs. Instead, it uses a temperature sensitive thermoresistor material, known as a Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) component, which acts as an electrical safety switch. The RGEF250-2 is one such PPTC Resettable Fuse.

The RGEF250-2 is designed for use on low voltage DC and AC overcurrent protection circuits. It has an IH (hold current) rating of 250mA (3.7V DC) and an IT (trip current) rating of 420mA (3.7V DC). It is capable of operating at temperatures up to 125°C and has an 8 mm x 8 mm x 2.8 mm form factor.

RGEF250-2 Application Field and Working Principle

The RGEF250-2 is typically used in a variety of different applications including, power supplies, automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics. It can also be used as a current-limiting protection device in AC and DC circuits. It is often used to protect expensive and sensitive circuits from damaging currents that are greater than what the circuit can handle. In operation, the RGEF250-2 contains two different types of materials that work together to provide overcurrent and overtemperature protection. The first is a Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) component, which acts as an electrical safety switch, while the second is a metal oxide varistor (MOV) which works in conjunction with the PPTC component. When the current in the circuit exceeds the predetermined IH (hold current) rating, the PPTC component will open, causing the circuit to be shut off. At the same time, the MOV will start to absorb and dissipate the excess energy in the form of heat. This in turn will trigger the PPTC component to reset itself and allow the circuit to resume normal operation.

The RGEF250-2 is a versatile and effective device for providing overcurrent and overtemperature protection in a wide range of applications. It is a cost-effective solution that requires no maintenance or replacement after an overload or fault occurs.
